Sitemap-Only and Orphan Pages: How to Check Internal Discovery

A sitemap-only page was found in the sitemap but no crawled internal HTML page linked to it. That is a discoverability review, not proof that the URL is broken or worthless.

Quick answer

A sitemap-only page appears in an XML sitemap but has no inbound link from the crawled internal HTML pages. Add relevant internal links when the page belongs in the site’s normal journey; otherwise confirm that sitemap-only discovery is intentional.

What the issue means

Internal links help people and crawlers discover relationships between pages. A sitemap provides another discovery mechanism, so the absence of an internal link does not automatically make a page an orphan or an SEO defect.

Why it matters for SEO

Important pages are usually easier to understand when they are connected contextually. Weak discovery can affect navigation and crawl prioritisation, but the right response depends on page purpose and site architecture.

How NOTABIS detects it

The orphan-page rule reconciles sitemap URLs with inbound links observed in the crawled HTML. It reports no observed inbound link; it cannot see links on pages outside the crawl or private navigation.

How to check it yourself

Search templates, menus, related-content modules, breadcrumbs, and category pages for links to the URL. Check whether the page is intentionally isolated, canonicalised, noindexed, or only used as a feed endpoint.

How to fix it

Add a useful contextual link from a relevant page, category, breadcrumb, or navigation path. Do not create irrelevant links merely to change the count, and remove URLs from the sitemap if they should not be discoverable or indexable.

When it may be intentional

Landing pages, campaign URLs, feeds, private routes, and specialised resources may intentionally rely on sitemap or direct discovery.
